Comics and Cancer: No Laughing Matter?

Funky Winkerbean Lisa Editor and Publisher reports that Lisa Moore, a character in the comic strip Funky Winkerbean, will lose her seven-year battle with cancer on October 4th. The strip received mixed reviews when it first started the story arc a few years back. Regardless, prostate cancer survivor and Funky author Tom Batiuk deserves credit for introducing cancer to the comics.

E&P also reports that Batiuk will team with the Cleveland-based University Hospitals Ireland Cancer Center to launch Lisa’s Legacy Fund for Cancer Research and Education. What do you think of Lisa’s passing? Was Batiuk right to try to show the funnies that cancer isn’t a laughing matter?

a gasp. tears. and the thought, ‘how brave’ after reading (for the first time) funky winkerbeam. comic authors have tackled many serious issues, why not cancer? as a four-year breast cancer survivor who has witnessed the survival and death of many friends (to cancer) i applaud the realization that the consequences of cancer are tragic and a vehicle to endure it can be humor.
